The Biochemical Society is proud to announce that by 2025, all papers published in its journals will be fully open access (OA), completing its transformation into an OA publisher. This milestone fulfills the Society's commitment to provide funder and institutionally compliant OA routes, in line with Plan S deadlines. The final stage in this transformation will be the implementation of the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model in 2025.
This transition is driven by the Society's mission to promote greater equity, diversity, and inclusion in scholarly communication. By offering four OA pathways, the Society aims to ensure that research is accessible to all, regardless of economic or institutional circumstances. The Subscribe to Open Community of Practice, Society Publishers Coalition, Jisc, CAUL, and consortia partners, alongside organizations like ALPSP, UKRI, Wellcome, and Plan S, have played key roles in guiding this transition.
As a fully OA publisher, the Biochemical Society will enhance the global dissemination of research, ensuring that data is reproducible and widely accessible. This shift will also allow the Society to continue delivering a high-quality publishing experience, maintaining rigorous peer review and efficient production times, while upholding the integrity of the scientific record.
Proceeds from publishing will support the Society’s initiatives, including funding grants, bursaries, and career development opportunities for scholars, contributing to the advancement of molecular biosciences research worldwide.
