The Biochemical Society has confirmed that all five of its journals will be published open access (OA) in 2025 under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model.
The following journals will be fully OA:
• Biochemical Journal (Volume 482)
• Clinical Science (Volume 139)
• Biochemical Society Transactions (Volume 53)
• Essays in Biochemistry (Volume 69)
• Emerging Topics in Life Sciences (Volume 9)
This transition was unanimously endorsed by the Portland Press Board and made possible through the renewed commitments of libraries under the S2O model. As a result, all research published in these journals will be freely accessible worldwide with no author fees.
This marks the completion of the Society’s long-term OA strategy, ensuring compliance with Plan S funder requirements through four pathways:
• Guaranteed OA via Read & Publish agreements
• Conditional OA under Subscribe to Open
• Full OA journals with Article Publishing Charges (APCs)
• Green OA through self-archiving
Publishing surpluses continue to support the scientific community, funding grants, bursaries, events, and training initiatives to advance molecular biosciences.
