BioInformatics report on impact of Web 2.0 and social media tools on publishing -

Market research and consulting firm BioInformatics, LLC, US, has announced the publication of its latest report, 'The Brave New World of Scientific Publishing.' Going beyond the original social media study published jointly in 2007 by BioInformatics and PJA, a B2B advertising and marketing agency, the latest report explores the impact of Web 2.0 and social media applications on traditional publishing methodologies. It also seeks to provide insight on how to best embrace this new industry standard to maintain a leadership role within the scientific community.

Offering an in-depth analysis of the opinions of over 1,500 life scientists, the report looks to uncover key findings about how scientists rely on the web for research, collaboration and networking. Discussion boards, blogs, Wikis, video and podcasts - scientists are learning how to employ Web 2.0 and social media tools to good effect. Additionally, the report indicates that reliance on traditional media as an information source is waning, while online collaborative tools are becoming increasingly valuable to today's researcher. Findings reveal that traditional publishing models, while still viable, no longer stand alone as a way to thrive in a community of scientists who want more speed, control and easier access to information than earlier.

The Brave New World of Scientific Publishing is based on 1,557 responses to a 37 question online survey fielded to the Science Advisory Board in May 2008.
