Open access publisher BioMed Central, UK, has announced the launch of a new open access journal Agriculture & Food Security. The journal recently launched as a venue for research addressing the challenge of global food security, with a particular focus on sustainable agriculture and food systems that better address local, regional, national and/or global food and nutritional insecurity.
According to the United Nations’ Demographers, the global population exceeded seven billion at the end of October 2011. Ensuring sustainable food production to provide adequate sustenance and nutrition for everyone therefore continues to be a matter of significant and urgent import.
In March, the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change published their report on 'Achieving Food Security in the Face of Climate Change'. The international Commission of experts, chaired by Sir John Beddington FRS, recommended seven key policy changes and actions that are needed in order to achieve food security in the face of climate change.
One of the Commissioners, Molly Jahn, joins with Malcolm Elliott and Magdy Madkour as a joint Editor-in-Chief of the journal. The Editors are supported by an eminent international editorial board, whose expertise cover the broad range of topics included in the journal, from basic science to informed government policy.
