BioOne has reached the sustainability threshold for its Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot for 2026. The milestone was achieved with support from consortia and library partners globally. The outcome ensures that the 2026 volumes of 71 titles in the BioOne Complete aggregation will be published Open Access immediately and in perpetuity.
The S2O cohort includes 54 societies, museums, and research organizations. It represents the largest number of independent publishers under a single S2O offer to date and includes the first S2O publishers from Japan, Kenya, China, and Brazil.
BioOne Complete encompasses 219 titles. The S2O model uses existing subscription funds and workflows to expand access while sharing subscription revenue across participating publishers in nonprofit scholarly communication.
BioOne’s adoption of S2O follows examples set by Annual Reviews, Project MUSE, and other members of the S2O Community of Practice, which are committed to transparent sharing of lessons learned.
