Global healthcare knowledge provider BMJ has added another open access title - BMJ Open Gastroenterology - to its burgeoning portfolio of specialist journals.
BMJ Open Gastroenterology, which opened for submissions on April 3, will be published in partnership with the British Society of Gastroenterology, which already co-owns Gut and Frontline Gastroenterology, two of the 50 specialist titles published by BMJ.
BMJ Open Gastroenterology is an online-only, open access title dedicated to publishing high quality, peer-reviewed, medical research in all disciplines and therapeutic areas of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition.
In common with BMJ's other open access titles, the journal will publish a wide range of material that isn't always available in more traditional outlets, such as study protocols and phase I clinical trials, meta-analyses, and small or specialist studies. It will also operate a fast submission and review process, with continuous publication online, to ensure up-to-date research is rapidly available worldwide.
The new title will be edited by Joseph Lim, Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of the Viral Hepatitis Program, and Co-Director of the Liver Center at the University of Yale, in the USA.
Professor Lim is in charge of an active clinical trials program evaluating novel investigational agents for chronic hepatitis B and C (HCV) infections at the Yale Liver Center. These include direct acting antiviral agents, novel interferons, and therapeutic vaccines. Another therapeutic area of interest is the health outcomes of patients infected with both HCV and HIV.
He has held numerous leadership roles for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American Gastroenterological Association, and has served on the editorial boards of JAMA, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and Hepatology.
In a separate announcement, BMJ announced that the journal BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care has been accepted for indexing in the global biomedical databases MEDLINE and PubMed, following a decision taken by the National Library of Medicine last year.
MEDLINE is intended primarily for researchers, practitioners, educators, administrators, and students in the health professions. More than 5000 titles are currently indexed on the database.
The decision signals that the title, a relatively new addition to BMJ's specialist journals portfolio, publishes original core biomedical content that is not only of high scientific quality but also makes a unique contribution to the greater understanding of palliative care.
