Medical publisher BMJ Group, UK, has announced that individuals and teams representing the company bagged various prizes in the fields of medicine, science, journalism and publishing over the past few months.
In June, BMJ's editor in chief, Dr. Fiona Godlee, won Health Editor of the Year at the UK Medical Journalists' Association 2010 awards, while Zosia Kmietovicz, BMJ Assistant News Editor, won Medical Journalist of the Year. Susan Mayor, a freelance journalist and regular contributor to the BMJ, also won Freelance Journalist of the Year.
In September, BMJ Case Reports, a specialist online title published by BMJ Group, won the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) Best New Journal 2010 award. The judges said the journal had created 'a successful and innovative publishing model by exploiting media traditionally avoided by mainstream journals.'
In October, Dr. Godlee was named as one of the 100 most important people in British science by The Times. Later, in November, the BMJ Learning module on ovarian cancer was 'highly commended' for the Best Professional Education Initiative at the Excellence in Oncology Awards. The free online tool aims to help GPs diagnose and treat ovarian cancer. Also in November, two BMJ Group journal editors were included in a list of Britain's top doctors by The Times. Harminder Dua is the UK Editor for British Journal of Ophthalmology and Andrew Bush is an Editor for Thorax.
