Medical publisher the BMJ Group, UK, has released a series of new apps for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to give healthcare professionals access to quality information.
Having recently been released on the iPad, the Best Practice app comes with 20 sample topics that enable clinicians to assess the app's structure, scope and editorial quality. The app is the first in its category to take advantage of 'in-app purchasing', whereby additional topics can be purchased from within the app, in packages ranging from £9.99 to £59.99.
Also available is the Doctor's Toolbag, which has been developed by the BMJ Group and CEBMi Ltd. It provides a fast and simple way to use the most effective rules in a busy clinical setting. Some rules help with diagnosis; others are useful for screening or assessing risk factors. Combining these rules with the latest evidence from Best Practice and Clinical Evidence from the BMJ Evidence Centre provides a succinct and up-to-date tool that can be incorporated into everyday clinical practice.
The Student BMJ app enables students to read the latest medical news, digest research or check out medical relevant events. Students can also listen to the latest products, read blogs by other medical students and leading medical figures, and take advantage of invaluable careers advice. The app is free of charge and updated regularly.
The BMJ Careers app is for doctors looking for new jobs. Utilising the same constantly-updating database of jobs as bmjcareers.com, the UK's leading medical recruitment website, this app has the latest jobs as they go live and allows users to manage their favourite jobs and searches. Doctors can search across all medical categories, specialties, grades and regions.
Other apps include, the BMJ iPad app which combines the weekly BMJ print journal selection of research, comment and education (with added interactivity), along with live feeds of the latest news, blogs, podcasts and videos to appear on bmj.com. The Best Health range of apps that come from the BMJ's Evidence Centre, are aimed at the general public and cover child health, depression and type 1 diabetes. With up-to-date, reliable information in plain English, the new apps enable patients to get the most out of a doctor's appointment and make the most informed choice about their care.
