The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has announced the election of Brian Murray, President and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers, as the new Chair of its Board of Directors for the 2025-2026 term. Murray, a longstanding member of the AAP board since 2008, previously served as Chair in 2015 and as an officer from 2014-2017. He also contributed to the International Publishers Association's executive committee for AAP from 2011 to 2018.
HarperCollins Publishers, founded as Harper & Row in 1970, was one of AAP’s founding members. Under Murray’s leadership, HarperCollins has thrived, with digital revenues making up more than 20% of the company’s turnover. The company’s success is attributed to strategic partnerships and strong relationships with booksellers, distributors, and tech platforms, driving innovation in digital formats and business models.
Additionally, the AAP Board elected Tyrrell Mahoney, President of Chronicle Books, as Vice Chair. Mahoney has been a part of the AAP Board since 2019. Jeremy North, Managing Director at Taylor & Francis, was re-elected as Treasurer, while YS Chi, Chairman of Elsevier, remains Immediate Past Chair.
Murray’s election marks a continued commitment to the publishing industry’s growth and transformation. With his vast experience and HarperCollins’s innovations under his leadership, he is poised to guide the AAP’s vision for the future of the publishing world.
