The British Ecological Society (BES) journals have announced the appointment of 148 new Associate Editors to their Editorial Boards. Following an open call at the end of 2022, these accomplished ecologists from around the world have joined the BES journals to contribute to the publication of high-quality, impactful ecological research.
The recruitment process, which took place for the third time, aimed to enhance the diversity and expertise of the Editorial Boards across all seven BES journals. It provided an opportunity for ecologists from various backgrounds to be involved in the decision-making process, ensuring that the BES publishes robust and influential scientific contributions that advance ecological research and practice globally.
The response to the open call was overwhelming, with a staggering 490 applications received from 68 different countries. The applications represented a wide range of expertise, encompassing the entire spectrum of ecology and interdisciplinary research, with individuals from academia, policy, and practice. The applicant pool included both early-career researchers and seasoned professors.
Notably, the BES received applications from a diverse array of researchers. Out of the 295 applicants who voluntarily filled in the Equality and Diversity monitoring form, 11% were from Black/African/Caribbean researchers, compared to only 2% in the previous open call in 2020. Additionally, 23% of applications came from researchers in the Global South (excluding China), while China accounted for 20% of the total applications.
From this exceptional pool of talent, the BES has appointed 148 new Associate Editors from 38 different countries. This has significantly enhanced the diversity of experiences and expertise across all BES Editorial Boards, enabling a more comprehensive and inclusive representation.
