C4DISC launches 2023 workplace equity survey to assess diversity and inclusion in scholarly publishing -

The Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC), a coalition of organizations in scholarly publishing and academia, has announced the launch of the Workplace Equity Survey (WE Survey) for 2023. This project aims to assess the current state of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in the scholarly publishing workforce while identifying longitudinal shifts in the industry. The survey will be officially launched at the Society for Scholarly Publishing's 45th Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon.

The 2023 WE Survey will be open for participation from May 29 to June 30, 2023, and invites all individuals working in the global scholarly publishing industry to contribute. The survey seeks to evaluate progress against the benchmarks established in 2018 when the first WE Survey revealed significant inequities within the workforce, including a lack of diversity and an absence of perspectives and contributions that reflected the broader population. The findings of the initial survey were published in Learned Publishing, and the supporting data are openly available in the IPCSR data archive.

The 2023 WE Survey, like its predecessor, will have a global reach and welcome participants from all sectors of scholarly publishing, including publishers, service providers, and related organizations. While the survey questionnaire has undergone some changes based on lessons learned, it remains similar to the original version. The survey covers various aspects such as work-life balance, career development, mentoring, networking, demographics, and attitudes and behaviors.

The Association of University Presses, a founding member of C4DISC, is pleased to support the 2023 WE Survey. By complementing the Lee & Low sponsored Diversity Baseline Survey (DBS 3.0), which examines the North American publishing industry across sectors, the WE Survey will provide a comprehensive understanding of the broader scholarly publishing workforce and its work cultures. The survey's updated benchmarks will enable evaluation and further development of equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives within the industry.

With the launch of the 2023 Workplace Equity Survey, C4DISC aims to foster a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable scholarly publishing landscape that embraces the richness of perspectives and creates opportunities for all professionals in the field.
