CABI launches open access journal on Multifunctional Landscapes -

CABI has announced the launch of CABI Multifunctional Landscapes, a new international, open access, peer‑reviewed journal dedicated to advancing integrated landscape research through inclusive, transdisciplinary, and practice‑oriented approaches. The journal has been developed in partnership with 1000 Landscapes for 1 Billion People, a global collaboration focused on sustainable landscapes.

The journal was established following consultation with researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and experts working on multifunctional landscapes. Feedback indicated strong interest in a dedicated publication to address the growing demand for evidence, policy insight, and practical lessons that support healthy landscapes and resilient economies. The journal aims to serve as a central hub for applied and integrative landscape knowledge, consolidating work currently dispersed across multiple disciplines and publications. It also seeks to encourage cross‑learning among diverse communities of practice, including bioregional, territorial, and place‑based regenerative development.

The journal will integrate ecological, social, economic, and governance perspectives, with a focus on practical application, interdisciplinary collaboration, and stakeholder participation. In addition to research articles, it will welcome case studies, policy insights, and reflections on challenging or unsuccessful initiatives to accelerate learning across the sector.

Landscape research originated in the 1980s with a focus on conservation and ecosystem management, later expanding to include agricultural production, poverty alleviation, climate, and regenerative development. Integrated Landscape Management was formally recognized at the Nairobi International Forum of the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature Initiative in 2012 and has since gained momentum across science, policy, and practice. Over the past two decades, multifunctional landscape management has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective approach to addressing complex global challenges through locally led solutions.

CABI will provide further updates on the journal’s development, including author guidelines and submission timelines.
