Cadmus unveils XML-to-EPUB conversion service for scholarly publishers -

Content management and production services provider Cadmus Communications, US, has announced the release of an automated XML-to-EPUB conversion service. The service will provide digital content to EPUB-compliant e-book devices, such as the Apple iPad, for the scholarly publishing community.

EPUB is an industry standard structure developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) that combines textual and rich media content in a single containerised format. While there are several device-specific e-book formats, EPUB is claimed to be supported by many devices and computer applications. Apple has reportedly specified EPUB as its preferred format for e-books for the iPad.

Cadmus, a Cenveo company, has developed an automated process to transform the NLM XML standard for the STM community, based on the National Library of Medicine's journal publishing and archiving DTDs, into the EPUB format. This conversion is projected to quickly and efficiently create an e-book reader compliant product derived from the same content currently used for print and online deliverables. Publishers that have adopted the NLM DTDs as a means of maintaining content structure can now expect to benefit from the automated process to expand the distribution channels for their content.

The automated transformation of NLM XML to EPUB is expected to allow publishers to leverage and extend the reach of their content with significantly reduced cost and time to market. The latest release is projected to fulfill a long-stated goal of the company to provide standards-based solutions that are highly automated, flexible and efficient.
