Cambridge Journals launches mobile version of online publishing service -

Cambridge University Press (CUP), the publishing division of the University of Cambridge, has announced that Cambridge Journals Online, the online publishing service for journals at CUP, has launched a mobile version. CJO Mobile offers a streamlined version of the journals platform CJO, home to over 250 academic journals. Users can expect to use it to search for journal content, read articles, save favourite articles and register for journal content alerts on their hand-held devices. Anything saved in mobile can be picked up again when back at a desktop machine, and vice versa.

CJO Mobile marks the beginning of Cambridge Journals' exploration of mobile Internet. The developers were keen to make CJO Mobile available to as wide an audience as possible. This meant creating a solution that catered not just for owners of Apple products but users of Google's Android OS, Nokia smartphones, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, and BlackBerry devices.

An extra benefit of opting for a mobile website, rather than an app, is the ability to offer a low-bandwidth version of CJO. Because CJO Mobile is smaller, in terms of data size, it is supposedly easier to use over slower Internet connections - crucial for Cambridge given the large number of philanthropic access programmes offered in developing countries. CJO Mobile will offer an easier route to important and often ground-breaking journal content for nations with less well-developed Internet infrastructures - something seen close to the heart of a publisher with a central mission to promote learning around the world.
