Cambridge University Press announces plans to reorganise printing business -

Academic publisher Cambridge University Press (CUP) has announced plans to reorganise its printing business, Cambridge Printing Services, Ltd (CPSL), as a printer to the European part of CUP's publishing operation. The move follows a strategic review of the company's printing business over the past nine months.

The review has shown that CPSL is unlikely to make a profit in its current form. This would mean that the scale of CPSL will need to be reduced by roughly two-thirds. While the company has said that wherever possible, staff in affected posts will be re-deployed within other parts of Cambridge University Press, it is expected that 133 jobs in CPSL will be lost, with 37 jobs retained in the new structure. Some redundancies are also expected in the Press's UK Education publishing business.

In a similar move, the Oxford University Press has announced lays offs in the company. According to media reports, in cuts that ranged between the New York and North Carolina offices, 60 workers have been laid off at OUP. The move, according to the company, is expected to help cope with upcoming reductions in school and library budgets in the coming year. The cuts will affect roughly 8.5 percent of the publisher's 700 employees in the US.
