The Canadian Journal of Forest Research and its publisher, Canadian Science Publishing, are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Nelson Thiffault and Dr. Jari Vauhkonen as Co-Editors-in-Chief. Joining forces with current Co-Editor-in-Chief Dr. Lisa Venier, the new leadership trio will guide the journal into its next chapter of fostering impactful forest science research.
The outgoing Co-Editor-in-Chief Dr. Sylvie Gauthier, a long-time champion of the journal, will transition to a Consulting Editor role. The journal extends its gratitude to Dr. S. Ellen Macdonald, whose significant contributions as Consulting Editor follow a successful tenure as Co-Editor-in-Chief.
Dr. Thiffault, a senior research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada, brings a wealth of expertise in silviculture and forest renewal. His research emphasizes sustainable practices to restore and adapt forests to climate change, supporting essential ecosystem services such as biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and wood fibre supply. With over 18 years of experience as an Associate Editor for the journal, Dr. Thiffault previously served as acting Co-Editor-in-Chief and is well-prepared to take on this leadership role.
Dr. Vauhkonen, a professor of forest planning and adjunct professor of forest remote sensing at the University of Eastern Finland, specializes in using forest inventory data for multi-objective planning and decision-making. His research explores the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques to enhance conventional forest management models. Since joining the editorial board in 2019, Dr. Vauhkonen has been an active and engaged Associate Editor, making him a natural fit for this leadership position.
Under the stewardship of Dr. Thiffault, Dr. Vauhkonen, and Dr. Venier, the Canadian Journal of Forest Research aims to expand its reach and impact, addressing pressing challenges in forest science, sustainability, and climate resilience.
Their combined expertise will ensure the journal remains at the forefront of publishing cutting-edge research that informs forest management, conservation, and policy worldwide.
