Environmental Reviews, published by Canadian Science Publishing, has appointed Dr. Baiyu Helen Zhang and Dr. Rolf Vinebrooke as its new co‑Editors‑in‑Chief. They joined the journal’s editorial leadership team on September 1, 2026, bringing complementary expertise in environmental engineering and environmental change.
Dr. Baiyu Helen Zhang is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Memorial University and holds a Canada Research Chair in Coastal Environmental Engineering. Her research focuses on the behavior, impact, and mitigation of marine and coastal pollution, particularly emerging contaminants. She indicated that she was eager to contribute an engineering perspective to the journal and to collaborate with Dr. Vinebrooke in broadening its reach and service to the global scientific community.
Dr. Rolf Vinebrooke is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta. His research examines the cumulative impacts of multiple stressors on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in mountain, boreal, prairie, and Arctic lakes, as well as processes of ecological recovery.
Drs. Zhang and Vinebrooke succeed Dr. John Smol, who has served as Editor‑in‑Chief for more than two decades. His current term will conclude at the end of 2026. Under his leadership, Environmental Reviews has established itself as a respected venue for synthesizing research on major environmental issues.
Since its founding in 1993, Environmental Reviews has published authoritative literature reviews across a wide range of environmental science and related fields. Canadian Science Publishing stated that the appointment of Drs. Zhang and Vinebrooke will support the journal’s continued publication of high‑impact reviews that advance understanding of established and emerging environmental challenges.
