CCC, a company focused on advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, recently hosted a panel discussion at The London Book Fair titled “Reading the Data Compass: The Guiding Role of Metadata in an Increasingly Complex Scholarly Research Ecosystem”. The panel included Matt Cannon, Head of Open Research at Taylor & Francis, Daniel Shanahan, Publishing Director at PLOS, and Dr. José Francisco Salm Junior, Professor at UDESC-ULisbon, with Christopher Kenneally, host of CCC’s Velocity of Content podcast, moderating. The discussion focused on the role of metadata in the scholarly research ecosystem and the challenges of transitioning to Open Access.
At the same event, CCC unveiled The State of Scholarly Metadata: 2023, a visual report conducted in collaboration with Media Growth Strategies that illustrates the complexities and value of metadata in the scholarly research lifecycle. The report draws on dozens of research interviews and highlights the significant economic and social impact that a fragmented metadata supply chain has on stakeholders in the research community. CCC also discussed its acquisition of Ringgold, a provider of persistent identifiers (PIDs) for the scholarly communications ecosystem.
CCC has been a longtime supporter of identifiers such as ORCID and ISNI, and the acquisition of Ringgold reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to promoting data interoperability, addressing market friction, and collaborating with stakeholders to create solutions. CCC is an active partner in the evolution of hybrid and pure OA publishing models, and is a member of several industry associations such as OASPA, ALPSP, STM, and SSP.
