Celebrating a decade of openness: CHORUS transforms scholarly communication with industry experts advancing open research -

CHORUS, the pioneering not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing open research, is celebrating a decade of groundbreaking work in transforming scholarly communication. Since its inception in 2014, CHORUS has rapidly evolved into a global network that unites researchers, libraries, funders, and publishers in an unprecedented collaboration aimed at making research more accessible, transparent, and impactful.

Over the past ten years, CHORUS has been at the forefront of revolutionizing how research is shared, assessed, and leveraged, becoming a catalyst for change in academic publishing. By breaking down traditional barriers, CHORUS has created an open research ecosystem that promotes collaboration, accessibility, and innovation on a global scale.

In 2024, CHORUS made significant strides in its mission to support the open research community through several key initiatives:

• Expanding Research Accessibility: CHORUS added over 1.47 million new publication records to its corpus, marking an 18.9% growth from the previous year. This expansion included tracking all digital object identifiers (DOIs) in the system, ensuring that a wider range of research is digitally preserved and accessible.

• Enhancing Global Connections: In its continued efforts to broaden its global reach, CHORUS integrated JaLC DOIs, allowing articles registered by Japanese corporations and organizations to be included in its system. This addition further strengthens the international connections that are crucial for advancing open research.

• Fostering Community Engagement: CHORUS hosted a Community Roundtable and eight online forums, creating spaces for robust discussions and engaging the research community on a variety of critical topics related to open research. These events encouraged participation from stakeholders across the globe, ensuring that all voices are heard in shaping the future of scholarly communication.

• Progressing Metadata Innovation: CHORUS successfully completed the INFORMATE project (NSF Grant #2334426) in collaboration with Metadata Game Changers. This initiative resulted in improved metadata quality for major U.S. agencies, such as NSF, USGS, and USAID, and enhanced workflows that increased engagement with these agencies.

• Growing Preprint Services: Expanding its preprint service, CHORUS focused on better identifying funded research and connecting it to published work. This growth was highlighted by the addition of Optica Open as a key partner, further bolstering the open access and preprint ecosystem.

• Collaborating on Strategic Initiatives: In partnership with The International Bunch, CHORUS conducted a customer value assessment and strategic marketing, while also collaborating with Molecular Connections to enhance its technical development capabilities.

• Supporting Stakeholders: CHORUS developed targeted reports on retracted articles, introduced new integrations, and launched features to provide stakeholders with actionable insights and tools, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of open research.

• Tracking Research Resources: Continuing its commitment to tracking research resources, CHORUS collaborated with CSIRO, publisher members, and other organizations to identify and link user facilities and research resources with published articles, facilitating greater access to these invaluable resources.

As it celebrates a decade of progress, CHORUS remains steadfast in its mission to make research more open, interoperable, and impactful. Looking ahead, CHORUS is poised to deliver even more innovative solutions to connect researchers, funders, and institutions, reinforcing its position as a driving force in the open research movement. The future holds great promise for further transforming how research is shared and utilized, fostering an environment where knowledge is freely accessible to all.
