China unveils English-language journal for global scientific data exchange -

China has launched Data Express, its first English-language academic journal dedicated to data papers, marking a step toward expanding international access to the country’s scientific data. The journal was formally announced at a conference in Beijing organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which will oversee its publication.

CAS stated that the initiative is intended to create a hub for global scientific data exchange and to address challenges in making high-value research data more accessible, shareable, and reusable. Yu Guirui, a CAS academician appointed as Editor-in-Chief, described the journal as a response to a significant shift in research practices. He noted that data has become a central element in artificial intelligence-driven discovery and emphasized that Data Express is designed to fill a gap in China’s scientific publishing landscape.

The journal is part of a broader plan. CAS announced that within a year, it intends to introduce specialized data journals in disciplines such as physics, ecology, biomedicine, and engineering. Together, these publications will form a Data Express cluster, aimed at addressing areas where China currently lacks dedicated outlets for data publication.

According to CAS, the cluster reflects a transition in China’s approach from individual exploration to active participation in international collaboration on scientific data sharing.
