The CIBER research unit at University College London is undertaking a project investigating the barriers facing qualified professionals (initially in the UK) in gaining access to specialised research publications which might be highly relevant in their current professional or career activities. This is a key audience which is currently not covered by the research library. Many of these professionals are members of learned societies.
The aim of the study will be to map the extent of such barriers and to suggest mechanisms whereby these barriers could be reduced, if not eliminated, without undermining the existing scholarly publishing system. The study has been commissioned by the Research Information Network (RIN), a funding agency supported in this instance by JISC and the Publishers Research Consortium (PRC).
The results would be shared though for the report itself (freely available) due to be completed early next year, and would be anonymous to ensure total confidentiality.
