Clarivate Analytics, a global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation, and Malaysia’s Ministry of Education (MOE) has unveiled the Malaysia’s Research Star Awards 2019 to recognise the country’s most outstanding researchers. This is the fifth time that the two parties have jointly presented this award to honour the most promising and influential researchers in Malaysia.
This year, eight researchers and two universities were awarded the Malaysia’s Research Star Awards, which are categorized as Hot Review Paper (one awardee) and Research and Innovation Excellence (seven researcher awardees and two university awardees). They span a variety of research disciplines, including engineering, information and communication technology, clinical and health sciences, natural sciences and social sciences.
Recipients of the Hot Review Paper Award are nominated based on the number of citations of papers within a defined period. According to the Web of Science Group, a Clarivate Analytics company, a hot review paper is defined as ‘a paper published in the past two years that received a number of citations in the most recent two-month period that places it in the top 0.1% of papers in the same field.’
The Research and Innovation Excellence Award aims to recognise researchers and universities for their strong scholarly and innovation output. One Research University and one Non-Research University will be recognised for excelling in applied research with commercial potential, based on their filed patents. Award recipients are nominated based on metrics such as the number of Web of Science papers, overall Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI), industry collaboration and patent-based metrics (number of patents, number of inventions and patent strength score) derived from Derwent InnovationTM, a leading patent research platform from Clarivate Analytics.
On a related note, fifteen researchers from Malaysia earned the distinction of being named amongst the world’s most influential 4,000+ scientists – as determined by their peers around the globe. They were named by Clarivate Analytics as 2018 Highly Cited Researchers for having published the greatest number of articles ranking among the top 1% worldwide by citations received in their respective fields in each paper’s year of publication. They received their 2018 Highly Cited Researcher certificates from Clarivate Analytics during the event.
