Clarivate Plc, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and Higher Education Press of China, has released the Engineering Fronts 2024 report, highlighting 184 key areas driving innovation in engineering research and development. Now in its eighth year, the report identifies 92 research fronts and 92 development fronts across nine engineering disciplines, including mechanical and vehicle engineering, information and electronic engineering, chemical, metallurgical, and materials engineering, energy and mining engineering, civil, hydraulic, and architectural engineering, environmental and light textile engineering, agriculture, medicine and health, and engineering management.
An engineering front is defined as a forward-looking and exploratory area of research or application with the potential to significantly influence future advancements in science and technology. The research fronts focus on theoretical exploration, identified using Web of Science™ citation data and expert nominations, while the development fronts emphasize practical applications, derived from patent data in Derwent Innovation™ and industry input.
Artificial intelligence (AI) emerged as a central theme, influencing areas such as AI-assisted early cancer screening and diagnosis in medicine and engineering management optimization using generative AI technologies. The Engineering Fronts 2024 report underscores the growing importance of data-driven insights and emerging technologies in addressing global challenges, offering a roadmap for researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers.
First published in 2015, the Engineering Fronts report continues to guide sustainable development and technological progress worldwide. The full report is available through Clarivate and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
