The COAR Notify Protocol is defined as a set of profiles, constraints, and conventions around the use of W3C Linked Data Notifications (LDN) to integrate repository systems with relevant services in a distributed, resilient, and web-native architecture. Through the COAR Notify Initiative, the community is developing and promoting a standard, interoperable, and decentralized approach to linking research outputs hosted in a distributed network of repositories with resources in other repositories or with external services, including overlay journals and open peer review services.
There is already a growing number of implementations for the major use cases identified by the initiative, but the COAR Notify protocol can support many additional purposes and contexts. To explore these wider possibilities, COAR is launching an Open Call for Proposals for Innovative Uses of the COAR Notify Protocol. Funding for this call is supported by a grant awarded to COAR by Arcadia for the COAR Notify Project.
The purpose of the call is to identify potential new use cases for the COAR Notify protocol through the prototyping of innovative implementations that link, interact, or integrate repository resources with other services or resources. The expected outcomes are prototype or proof-of-concept implementations that connect at least two systems or services using the COAR Notify protocol.
Grants under this call will be awarded for amounts up to 10.000 €. The call will open on November 18, 2025 and will close at the end of the day on January 18, 2026. Applicants will be notified of the results of the evaluation and selection process within two weeks after the call closes.
Proposals should focus on innovative uses of the COAR Notify protocol within the domain of research outputs or information and scholarly communication. The call is open to any individual or entity with a suitable idea. Submissions must not exceed three pages in length and must clearly describe the problem, need, or opportunity being addressed; the proposed solution, including core features, key deliverables, and the technical approach; the unique innovation or value proposition and its potential impact; the person or team members involved and their relevant experience in the domain; the timeline for completing the work, with a maximum duration of three months; and the required funding and associated costs.
Proposals will be evaluated and selected based on several criteria: relevance to the objectives of the call; feasibility and technical quality; the degree of innovation and originality of the proposed implementation; potential impact, including the ability to address the stated problem and the scalability of the idea; the capability and expertise of the project team; and value for money.
Submissions must be written in English and sent by email to office@coar-repositories.org with the subject line “Call for innovative uses of COAR Notify”.
