Knowledge management and discovery software developer Collexis Holdings, Inc., US, has announced that its life science research portal http://www.BiomedExperts.com has surpassed 80,000 registered users. BiomedExperts claims to be the world's first literature-based professional social networking site that was pre-populated with more than 1.8 million expert profiles from PubMed. The site allows scientists and researchers to directly connect with and explore their professional contacts, grow their networks and identify researchers with the expertise needed for future collaborations.
The site seeks to provide user-friendly interfaces through which research collaborators can share data and network with 1,800 organisations and institutions from 137 countries. It was selected by research and advisory firm Outsell, Inc. as one of the top 10 social communities to watch in 2009, in its report Social Media in STM Part 1: Social Networking. In addition, a recent Elsevier study found after only seven months post launch, BiomedExperts was the second most frequently used life science social network behind Nature, but ahead of Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn.
Collexis develops applications that range from search tools for users' websites to highly sophisticated discovery applications that are utilised by the intelligence community and R&D organisations worldwide. These applications allow users to identify and search for documents, experts, trends or new discoveries that may be hidden in the materials.
