COS invites developers to enhance Open Science Framework through NSF-backed initiative -

The Center for Open Science (COS) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking contributions from open-source developers to advance the functionality and interoperability of the Open Science Framework (OSF). The initiative is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under its Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) program.

The OSF is a free, open-source platform developed by COS that supports researchers throughout the full research lifecycle, from initial study design and data collection to publication, archiving, and reuse. The new call for proposals is intended to strengthen the OSF ecosystem through community-led enhancements that align with the platform’s strategic roadmap and user-defined priorities.

Funded through the NSF POSE program, the initiative focuses on supporting sustainable, community-based development of open-source infrastructure within the research and technology sectors. Selected development teams will collaborate directly with COS and the broader open-source community to implement targeted improvements.

The project will prioritize two core development areas: enhancing connections among digital repositories, tools, and services within the research workflow; and improving open scholarship workflows across varied research methodologies and output types. Development tasks will include new feature creation, tool integrations, debugging, and compliance with best practices in software development, documentation, and security.

Funded developers will also participate in an in-person Hackathon alongside OSF team members, with travel costs covered by the award.
