CRUE renews transformative open access agreement with Elsevier for 2025–2028 -

The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) has renewed its transformative agreement with Elsevier for the 2025–2028 period. The decision was approved during the organization’s Extraordinary General Assembly held on April 4, 2025.

The agreement, which had been set to expire on December 31, 2024, ensures continued access to Elsevier’s ScienceDirect full-text journal content. It also provides for the centralized availability of Article Processing Charges (APCs) over the next four years, supporting open access publishing for affiliated researchers.

Details regarding the list of journals included in the renewed license and access to the APC management platform are expected to be published shortly on the Funding for Open Access Publishing page. Once available, this information will guide researchers in making use of the agreement’s provisions.

As part of the updated arrangement, Elsevier will permit open access back-publication of articles originally published under closed access during the first quarter of 2025, for eligible titles within the agreement. The UAB Library Service will contact the corresponding authors to facilitate this process once relevant data is shared by the publisher.

This new agreement builds on similar transformative contracts that CRUE has established with other major publishers—including Wiley, Springer Nature, and the American Chemical Society (ACS)—in pursuit of expanding access to scholarly knowledge through open access frameworks.
