Daniel J. Montgomery appointed Executive Director of the American Library Association -

The American Library Association (ALA) has named Daniel J. Montgomery its new Executive Director, succeeding Interim Executive Director Leslie Burger. Montgomery will officially begin his tenure on November 10, 2025, bringing over two decades of experience in public service, labor advocacy, and organizational leadership.

Montgomery has led the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT), a 103,000-member union, as president since 2010, having been unanimously re-elected in every subsequent election. In this role, he also served as the organization’s chief operating officer, overseeing a staff of 100 across 11 statewide offices, directing programs and policies on behalf of 400 local affiliates.

The search committee highlighted Montgomery’s proven commitment to public institutions, ability to navigate complex and politically diverse environments, and track record managing large, member-driven organizations. His experience spans urban and rural constituencies, making him well-suited to lead a nationwide nonprofit with a diverse membership base.

In addition to his leadership at IFT, Montgomery holds degrees from the University of Michigan (A.B.) and Northwestern University (M.S.Ed.), focusing on education and social policy.

Emily Drabinski (Queens College, CUNY) chaired the executive search, which included library leaders from institutions such as the University of Nevada, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Alabama, and San Antonio. Lorelle Hopkins, ALA Associate Executive Director for Human Resources, served as staff liaison.
