Academic publisher De Gruyter Brill and the consortium Irish Research e-Library (IReL) have signed a new agreement providing more than 220,000 researchers, staff, and students at eighteen participating member institutions with access to the complete collection of De Gruyter Brill journals. The agreement also allows affiliated authors to publish their research open access in De Gruyter Brill journals at no additional cost.
The agreement runs from January 2026 through December 2028 and provides unrestricted access to all issues across De Gruyter Brill’s portfolio of more than 830 journals, with coverage dating back to 1826. The portfolio includes titles such as Vigiliae Christianae, Semiotica, and the Journal of the History of International Law.
Under the publishing provisions, affiliated authors will be able to publish open access in more than 790 journals, including a growing number that operate under the Subscribe to Open model. Subscribe to Open is described as an alternative open access transformation approach that relies on existing library subscriptions and enables authors to publish open access without cost, regardless of affiliation.
The consortium has noted that the agreement aligns with its principles of providing uncapped open access at an affordable price, with transparent licensing terms and inclusion of the Subscribe to Open model to reduce barriers to open access publishing. The publisher has indicated that the agreement represents a step toward expanding open access publishing in Ireland and supporting researchers at member institutions, contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive approach to achieving full open access for the Irish research community.
