De Gruyter Brill confirms 124 journals publishing open access via Subscribe to Open -

De Gruyter Brill has confirmed that all 124 journals in its Subscribe to Open (S2O) program, DG2O, will publish open access in 2026. Following the annual evaluation, each participating title met its renewal threshold, marking the sixth consecutive year in which the program has opened successfully. As a result, more than 4,000 research articles will be freely available to readers worldwide this year, without fees for authors.

With 124 journals now publishing open access, DG2O is the largest Subscribe to Open program operated by a single publisher. The program spans the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, including subject areas where traditional author‑fee‑based open access models have been difficult to implement. The addition of 66 new titles in January means that more than half of De Gruyter’s journal portfolio now publishes open access.

Subscribe to Open remains central to De Gruyter Brill’s open access strategy, which is based on a mixed‑model approach. Unlike article processing charge (APC) models, S2O requires no publication fees from authors. Journals transition to open access one year at a time when sufficient institutions renew their subscriptions. The model is cost‑neutral for libraries and requires no new administrative processes, making it a particularly equitable pathway for disciplines underrepresented in the global shift to open access.

The success of DG2O is supported by more than 1,400 institutional and library partners worldwide. These partners contribute by maintaining subscriptions or upgrading to De Gruyter Brill’s “All‑Inclusive” model, which provides institutions with unlimited access to the full portfolio, complimentary access to complete journal archives, and guaranteed open access publishing for affiliated researchers across hybrid, gold OA, and S2O journals.

Stephanie Veldman, Director of Open Research at De Gruyter Brill, noted that the achievement of publishing 124 journals open access without author fees for the sixth consecutive year was made possible by the continued support of institutions. She expressed appreciation for the partners involved and indicated that the publisher looks forward to welcoming additional participants to help shape a fairer and more inclusive scholarly publishing system.

Institutions interested in supporting the program or learning more about All‑Inclusive agreements are encouraged to contact their regional sales representative or visit the Subscribe to Open information page.
