De Gruyter Brill expands Subscribe to Open program with 66 journals -

De Gruyter Brill will expand its Subscribe to Open (S2O) program in 2026 by transitioning 66 additional journals to open access. The move will bring the total number of titles under the initiative, branded DG2O, to 124, marking one of the publisher’s largest expansions to date.

The new additions cover a wide range of disciplines across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Journals such as B.E. Journal of Macroeconomics, Folia Linguistica, Journal of Globalization and Development, Mammalia, and Beiträge zur Geschichte der deutschen Sprache und Literatur will become openly accessible if funding targets are met.

De Gruyter Brill’s Subscribe to Open (S2O) program is supported by institutions such as Vanderbilt University, the KERIS, CAUL, and BIBSAM consortia, Wesleyan University, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the University of Pennsylvania, SUB Göttingen, and McMaster University. Through the publisher’s “All-Inclusive” agreement, these institutions enjoy additional benefits, including unlimited access to the entire De Gruyter Brill journal portfolio and open access publishing opportunities for faculty in hybrid, gold OA, and S2O journals.

As in previous years, De Gruyter Brill will evaluate institutional support for its S2O journals at the end of February 2026. If the program’s targets are met, the 2026 volumes will be published as open access.

Additionally, starting January 1, 2026, participating institutions will receive complimentary access to the complete archive of each journal from the first issue onward, adding further value for supporting libraries.

The DG2O initiative has been positioned as a sustainable model for equitable open access. Through its “All-Inclusive” agreements, institutions also gain benefits such as unlimited journal access and publishing opportunities across hybrid and open access titles.

Formed in 2024 through the merger of De Gruyter and Brill, the publisher produces more than 3,500 books and 800 journals annually, with a focus on the humanities and social sciences alongside STEM disciplines.
