De Gruyter Brill will expand its Subscribe to Open program (DGB2O) in 2027 with the addition of three new journals, bringing the total number of participating titles expected to transition to open access that year to 126.
The journals joining the program are HTM / Journal of Heat Treatment and Materials, a bilingual forum for heat treatment, materials technology, and process engineering; Radiochimica Acta, an international journal covering chemical aspects of nuclear science and technology; and Historische Anthropologie, a German‑language journal focused on transdisciplinary research at the intersection of history, culture, and social practice.
The inclusion of Historische Anthropologie, published by Böhlau, marks the beginning of the program’s expansion to Brill and its imprints. First introduced at De Gruyter in 2021, DGB2O is a central element of De Gruyter Brill’s mixed‑model open access strategy, with additional Brill titles expected to join in the future.
DGB2O is recognized as the world’s largest single‑publisher Subscribe to Open program and has become a key initiative in advancing open access for journals in the humanities, social sciences, and other disciplines. Under this model, existing library subscriptions collectively fund open access for all readers and authors, without author‑facing publication fees. The program has been particularly effective in the humanities and social sciences, where grant‑based funding for article processing charges is limited. De Gruyter Brill also participates in the S2O Community of Practice.
Many libraries and consortia support DGB2O through DGB Unlimited, the publisher’s flagship institutional open access agreement. DGB Unlimited provides institutions with unlimited reading access and open access publishing rights across the full journal portfolio under one agreement and annual fee. Agreements are already in place with organizations such as the Max Planck Society, SURF in the Netherlands, IrEL in Ireland, JISC in the United Kingdom, and BIBSAM in Sweden.
