Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing, US, has announced that the Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, has selected EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). The adoption of EDS continues Deakin University Library's long history of utilising new technologies to improve the student experience and providing innovative access to and discovery of quality scholarly information.
The university has long recognised that users have different preferences for searching and connecting to the information they need. The challenge for the library has been to provide clear pathways to sources of information for diverse user groups, ranging from undergraduate students needing to quickly find resources for their unit, to academic and research staff with more intensive research needs.
EDS offers a single search option to a custom collection including, Deakin's own library catalogue and the university's institutional research repository, Deakin Research Online. EDS will provide the solution for many users - a way to easily and rapidly find the information they need on a topic, regardless of whether that information resides in a purchased or leased book, DVD, or licensed database.
EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customised index of an institution's information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box. The EDS Base Index forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes.
