In a move to further advance open access in scientific research, the DEAL Consortium and renowned scholarly publisher Wiley have inked a new five-year agreement. This strategic partnership, initiated by the Alliance of German Science Organizations, will empower scientists from more than 900 predominantly publicly funded academic institutions in Germany to publish their research open access (OA) within Wiley's esteemed portfolio of scientific journals.
The agreement, signed by Wiley and MPDL Services gGmbH as the DEAL Operating Entity, is set to commence in January 2024, reinforcing the commitment to meet the evolving needs of the scholarly community and expedite the open access transformation.
Building upon the success of their collaboration since 2019, which has seen over 38,000 articles published open access, the new agreement promises a myriad of benefits. Participating German institutions will gain open-access publishing options across Wiley's extensive journal portfolio while retaining read access to all Wiley journal content.

The original agreement, initiated in 2019, was a trailblazer as the first transformative agreement for DEAL, solidifying Wiley's commitment to open access. This new agreement adds to Wiley's impressive global portfolio, as the publisher has already signed open access agreements with around 80 partners worldwide, covering over 2,500 institutions.
