DOAJ announces new publisher supporter model and welcomes new partners -

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) has provided an update on its revised publisher supporter model, which was first launched in September last year. The updated model emphasizes transparency and aligns with the Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure. While most of DOAJ’s support comes from libraries and institutions, the organization also relies on publisher contributions to sustain and enhance its services, which have a far-reaching impact on the scholarly journals community.

For the upcoming year, several notable publishers have joined DOAJ’s new model, contributing to its operating costs for 2024. These supporters include major academic publishers such as ACS Publications, Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, IEEE, MDPI, PLOS, Sage Publishing, Springer Nature, Wiley, and many more. DOAJ expressed gratitude for their continued commitment to open access and the advancement of scholarly publishing.

Importantly, DOAJ reaffirmed that all journal applications are reviewed based on the same rigorous standards, regardless of a publisher’s supporter status, ensuring the integrity of its indexing process.

A key highlight in the new model is the introduction of non-commercial and institutional publisher rates, which enable community-driven platforms to offer support while reflecting their role in sustaining shared infrastructure. As part of this, DOAJ proudly welcomed Érudit, a long-term partner and a significant contributor to Canadian scholarly publishing, as a new supporter under these rates. DOAJ hopes this will inspire similar platforms to follow suit.

Publishers that benefit from the quality assurance and visibility provided by DOAJ’s indexing are encouraged to consider joining the supporter model to help strengthen the future of open access publishing.
