Dr. Anke Beck, one of two Managing Directors at De Gruyter, has decided to leave the company to pursue new challenges in publishing. Carsten Buhr, Managing Director, will take on sole management responsibility for De Gruyter.
Anke Beck began her career as Editor-in-Chief of Mouton de Gruyter in 1994 and developed Mouton into the quality brand it is today. In 2007, she joined the senior management team at De Gruyter and was appointed Managing Director of the company in 2013.
Anke Beck was instrumental not only in expanding De Gruyter's publishing program in the Humanities and Social Studies, but also in building up a growing STEM publishing program, significantly expanding and improving the OA journal and books program and driving digitisation and the development of innovative digital products at De Gruyter.
She played a key role in the establishment of a large number of editorial partnerships with leading university presses in the United States and led the integration of a number of acquisitions for the company, including BE Press, Oldenbourg, Akademie Verlag, Lucius & Lucius and, most recently, Deutscher Kunstverlag.
Furthermore, she was the driving force behind the establishment of De Gruyter's presence in China and the building up of De Gruyter's Beijing office, and her role in familiarising authors and editors outside of Germany with De Gruyter and making the program increasingly international has established De Gruyter globally as a significant, independent publisher of high-quality content and the publishing home of many international scholarly and professional societies.
Over the past few years, Anke successfully built up the editorial team by supporting existing colleagues and attracting new ones to the company. Her vast experience and deep understanding of the research community and the publishing sector were expertly woven into the day-to-day business of running the company. Anke Beck also serviced on a variety of boards of educational and academic institutions.
