The American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced that Dr. Bonnie A. Charpentier, a chemist and vice president of Metabolex, Inc., in Hayward, California, has been re-elected as Chair of the Board of Directors of the ACS. First elected to that position in December 2009, she will continue her duties through 2011, the International Year of Chemistry (IYC).
In addition, Charpentier will continue to serve on the board as the Director from District VI, which covers 11 western states, including Alaska, Hawaii and part of Canada. She has served on the ACS board of directors since 2006.
Charpentier emphasises the importance of communicating the value of chemistry through public outreach and education, including the Chemistry Ambassadors programme, National Chemistry Week (NCW), chemistry workshops for teachers and workshops to train university students for job interviews. She is an advocate for programmes at the state and local level that support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
An ACS member since 1982, she has served on and chaired a variety of Society committees and task forces at the local and national levels, including those focused on policy, nominations, local sections, governance, program review and communications. She has also been chair of the Cincinnati and Santa Clara Valley Local Sections.
