Dr. Brian Crawford, President of the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS), has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of American Publishers, the industry's leading trade association. Effective July 2011, Dr. Crawford will serve until 2015. The Board represents more than 300 US organisations that are AAP members and span commercial, educational, professional and scholarly publishing.
With more than two decades' experience in the US scientific, technical and medical (STM) information industry, Dr. Crawford assumed his current position in 2007. In this role, he holds general management responsibility for the ACS peer-reviewed journals portfolio and all editorial, digital, publishing, marketing and product development functions of the Society's periodical, Chemical & Engineering News. He joined the organisation in 2004 as Senior Vice President of the Journals Publishing Group.
Dr. Crawford previously held publishing and executive roles at John Wiley & Sons, Inc. for 15 years, including Vice President and Publishing Director, Global Life and Medical Sciences. Among his accomplishments, he led the strategic development and overall management of Wiley's life and medical sciences publishing business. Prior to his publishing career, Dr. Crawford was active in both scientific research and university teaching.
Active in his professional communities, Dr. Crawford also serves as a member of the Executive Board of the International Association of STM Publishers. He previously was Chair of the Executive Council of AAP's Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division and President of the Board of Directors of The American Medical Publishers Association.
