Christine Laine, MD, MPH, Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Internal Medicine and Senior Vice President at the American College of Physicians (ACP), has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Dr. Laine, who is also a professor at Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College and an attending physician at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, received this prestigious recognition for her significant contributions to the field of medicine and medical journalism.
Election to NAM is one of the highest distinctions in health and medicine, reserved for those demonstrating exceptional achievement and dedication to service. Dr. Laine’s election recognizes her influence in medical publishing and her commitment to addressing critical issues, including firearm-related violence, equitable healthcare, misinformation, reproductive health, reproducible research, and scientific integrity.
The Academy acknowledged Dr. Laine’s work in expanding the impact of Annals of Internal Medicine and her advocacy through ACP. She joins a distinguished group of faculty members at Jefferson, being the sixth to achieve this honor, alongside Drs. Julia Haller and Said Ibrahim, who was formally inducted in 2023.
Dr. Laine’s career includes numerous accolades, such as Jefferson’s Distinguished Faculty Service Award and the Pressman Award from the ACP Pennsylvania Chapter. Her leadership extends to international medical publishing organizations, including the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, the Council of Science Editors, and the World Association of Medical Editors, where she has played a key role in shaping policies on authorship, conflicts of interest, and data sharing.
