Dr. Thomas Varghese appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons -

For only the eighth time in its 119-year history, the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS) will welcome a new Editor-in-Chief. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Thomas K. Varghese Jr., MD, MS, MBA, FACS, will assume the prestigious role on March 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. Timothy J. Eberlein, who has served in the position since 2004. Dr. Varghese’s appointment was announced at the JACS Opening Ceremony.

Dr. Varghese, a renowned thoracic surgeon, currently serves as chief of general thoracic surgery and a tenured professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Utah Health, Salt Lake City. He is also the chief value officer at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. His editorial experience includes serving on the editorial board of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Perioperative Care and Operating Room Management, as well as deputy editor of digital media for The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

In his new role, Dr. Varghese aims to make JACS a collaborative platform for advancing surgical science, sharing breakthroughs, and fostering improvement in healthcare systems. His editorial vision includes leveraging digital media to enhance accessibility and user engagement, aiming to provide readers with high-quality, impactful content.

The first issue under Dr. Varghese’s editorship is anticipated in April 2025.
