Ex Libris®, a ProQuest company, has announced that East Tennessee State University (ETSU) has chosen the Ex Libris RapidILL resource-sharing service to improve the interlibrary loan experience for patrons of the university’s Sherrod Library.
Originally developed by staff at the Colorado State University (CSU) Libraries and recently acquired by Ex Libris, RapidILL offers users enhanced services at significant cost savings by eliminating various fees, expediting processing, leveraging a library’s own print and electronic journal holdings, and reducing the amount of staff time required for processing interlibrary loan requests. Currently, RapidILL is in use at more than 330 institutions.
Seeking to strengthen Sherrod Library’s support for the ETSU vision, the resource-sharing staff explored options for enhancing their services and improving their workflows and tools. The RapidILL service will address the university’s needs by streamlining the article-request processes through the library’s ILLiad environment and providing workflow efficiencies and automation that will enable the library staff to devote more time to other duties.
The vision of ETSU is to develop a world-class environment to enhance student success and improve the quality of life in the region and beyond. The RapidILL solution will assist Sherrod Library in fulfilling this vision by providing interlibrary loan department with the resources necessary for supporting teaching and research at ETSU in a timely and user-friendly manner.
As part of the worldwide RapidILL community of libraries and extensive combined journal collections, East Tennessee State University will participate in resource sharing at the highest level, with turnaround times of less than 24 hours for fulfillment and with reciprocal lending that will provide significant cost savings. The RapidILL system will facilitate article transactions through automated, targeted lender identification processes and sophisticated load levelling to help ensure that requests are filled quickly and are distributed evenly among holding libraries.
