Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO), US, has announced a new agreement to add Haz-Map to its ExPub database. Haz-Map is designed to assist professionals seeking information about the health effects of exposure to chemicals and biological agents in the workplace.
Haz-Map references hundreds of resources. It links jobs and hazardous job tasks with occupational diseases and their symptoms. Haz-Map contains profiles on thousands of chemicals—focusing on uses, adverse effects, and other information needed for exposure assessment. Each chemical is linked to associated industrial processes and non-occupational activities. Each chemical is also linked to any of the 225 occupational diseases in the database in which a causal relationship has been established.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2007, workers suffered more than 55,000 illnesses related to chemical exposures, and nearly 17,500 chemical-related injuries and illnesses resulted in workers spending days away from work. If recognized, occupational diseases are preventable. To recognise them, health & safety professionals need quick access to comprehensive information.
