Electronic research databases provider EBSCO, US, has announced the winner of its 2011 Charleston Conference Scholarship. The winner is Matthew Harrington, collections management assistant at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. This year's event – the 31st Annual Charleston Conference, titled 'Something's Gotta Give' - will be held November 2 – 5, 2011, in Charleston, S.C.
Applicants for the EBSCO scholarship were asked to consider the topic 'Under Pressure: Libraries Evolving to Thrive' and submit a short essay about the positive changes their libraries are making in order to adapt to the ever-changing library landscape.
Matthew's winning essay outlines how the academic library continues to reinvent itself in the wake of 'changing currents within academia and the various economic and technological spheres of scholarship.' It also notes that, despite these challenges, libraries are evolving into energetic centers for scholarly activity that are now better equipped to match the exuberance of students.
This is EBSCO's third year sponsoring a scholarship for a librarian to attend the Charleston Conference. The scholarship money awarded will be used for conference registration, travel, and expenses.
