Electronic research databases provider EBSCO publishing (EBSCO), a division of EBSCO Industries Inc., US, has announced that it has expanded its Shibboleth authentication service to Germany. German institutions will now be able to use Shibboleth via the DFN-AAI (Authentication Authorizing Infrastructure).
EBSCO worked with the German Research Network (DFN) to enable universities to access their EBSCOhost research databases through Shibboleth authentication. The standards-based, open source middleware software provides Single SignOn (SSO) for the web within organisations. Sites using Shibboleth can make authorisation access decisions regulating individual access to their protected online resources.
EBSCO first introduced support of the Shibboleth authentication service in 2004, in response to customer requests. Library administrators can enable any of these Shibboleth authentication services in EBSCOadmin, the administrative module for EBSCOhost.
