EDP Sciences and the European Southern Observatory (ESO) have announced a groundbreaking collaboration that introduces direct links between articles published in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) and corresponding ESO datasets. This pioneering initiative makes A&A the first major astronomy journal to feature such links, revolutionizing research discoverability and creating a more immersive reader experience.
The ESO Telescope Bibliography (ESO telbib), a renowned resource curated by the ESO Library, Documentation and Information Services (LDIS) department, provides references to articles utilizing ESO data published in leading astronomy journals. Leveraging its API, the A&A publication platform, maintained by EDP Sciences, now integrates direct links to the associated datasets at ESO telbib. This development empowers researchers with approximately 8000 direct links to ESO data, facilitating seamless exploration and analysis.
This integration builds upon EDP Sciences' existing provision of direct links to vital astronomy databases, such as the NASA ADS Abstract Service and the CDS (Strasbourg astronomical Data Center).
The implementation of these direct links significantly enhances the findability of ESO data for A&A readers, aligning with the FAIR guiding principles of scientific data management. A&A's commitment to integrating ESO datasets not only benefits the scientific community but also serves as an inspiration for other journals and data repositories to follow suit, promoting open science and facilitating broader collaboration.
