EDP Sciences, in collaboration with the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI), has released its 2024 Transparency Report for mathematics journals, showcasing their ongoing dedication to transparency in open access (OA) publishing. This report is part of the "Road to Open" series, which underscores the publisher's commitment to open access and operational transparency. Now in its fourth year, the report highlights key achievements under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, further promoting equitable access to scholarly research.
Key Highlights from the 2024 Transparency Report:
• Sustained Open Access: All six mathematics journals supported by EDP Sciences and SMAI will continue to offer open access in 2024. This success is attributed to strong subscription renewals and support from the global mathematics library community, which endorses the S2O model's non-author-paid OA approach. • Moderate Subscription Price Increases: Subscription prices increased by 2% in both 2023 and 2024, reflecting inflation while maintaining affordability for libraries. • Stable Article Output and Usage: The journals published 449 articles in 2023, a number consistent with the previous year. Full-text downloads remained steady at 436,655, demonstrating sustained interest in the content, even as many researchers continue to rely on preprint platforms like arXiv for initial access to mathematics research. • Financial Sustainability: Revenue from traditional subscriptions covered 51% of publication costs in 2023, with additional funding from institutions and other supporters. Efforts to reduce publication costs are ongoing, with the average cost per article standing at €950. Despite a deficit, 72% of costs were covered by various revenue sources, marking improved financial sustainability. • Support from National Agreements and Partnerships: National and international agreements, such as the French National Open Access Agreement, and partnerships with organizations like Knowledge Unlatched, provide crucial financial backing. Additional support from the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the Fonds National pour la Science Ouverte (FNSO) has further enabled the successful transition to open access. The 2024 Transparency Report also offers an in-depth analysis of subscription pricing trends, publication statistics, and a detailed breakdown of revenue sources. EDP Sciences and SMAI remain committed to refining the S2O model, ensuring long-term sustainability while reducing costs and enhancing access to high-quality mathematical research.
