eLife appoints Timothy Behrens as Editor-in-Chief -

eLife has announced the appointment of Professor Timothy (Tim) Behrens as its new Editor-in-Chief. Behrens, a Professor of Computational Neuroscience at both the University of Oxford and University College London, will spearhead eLife’s mission to revolutionize research communication and publishing practices.

Behrens has been a key contributor to eLife’s work and previously served as interim co-Editor-in-Chief alongside Detlef Weigel for over a year. Following an open and competitive search process, Behrens was selected for the role, bringing extensive experience and a long-standing commitment to eLife’s innovative vision.

As Editor-in-Chief, Behrens will shape eLife’s editorial strategy and provide leadership to its academic editors. He will also act as the journal’s public advocate, promoting its groundbreaking approach to peer review and its dedication to publishing excellence in science.

Behrens’ work will extend beyond editorial leadership, as he collaborates with eLife’s Technology and Innovation team to guide the development of open-source software that enhances the review, display, and curation of Reviewed Preprints. These efforts aim to make research communication more transparent, accessible, and efficient for the global scientific community.

In addition to his editorial responsibilities, Behrens will support eLife’s broader research culture initiatives, including its Early-Career Advisory Group and Community Ambassadors program. These initiatives aim to foster a more inclusive and equitable future for research communication, ensuring that voices from across the global scientific community are represented and heard.

Detlef Weigel, who served as co-Editor-in-Chief with Behrens during the transition period, will continue his involvement with eLife as a Senior Editor. A Deputy Editor since eLife’s launch in 2012, Weigel has been instrumental in shaping the journal’s evolution and is recognized for his dedication and leadership over the years.

The eLife team, led by Behrens and supported by Weigel, remains committed to its mission of transforming the way scientific discoveries are reviewed, shared, and accessed worldwide.
