Elsevier has extended its Check Integrity article submission screening tool to nearly 2,000 journals following the completion of a pilot phase, aiming to identify potential ethical concerns in research papers before publication. The Check Integrity tool is designed to identify potential violations of publishing ethics policies, including unauthorized changes to authorship and editorial conflicts of interest, so these issues can be reviewed and addressed by a team of experts.
A notable number of flagged concerns to date have resulted in corrective actions to ensure adherence to ethics policies, indicating the tool’s role in reducing the likelihood of future corrections in the published record. Check Integrity performs automated reviews of submitted manuscripts and highlights potential issues for specialist integrity analysts, who then evaluate the findings and determine whether further action is required.
This workflow enables journal editors to concentrate on assessing credible research submissions while supporting improvements in operational efficiency and trust within the publishing process. Check Integrity’s purpose is to support the safeguarding of research integrity by managing screening and initial communications, allowing editors to focus on evaluating authentic, high-quality research and contributing to a more efficient, reliable publication process.
The tool is designed to evolve in response to emerging risks and to support researchers and editors in managing increasing submission volumes. Check Integrity forms part of Elsevier’s broader investment in technological systems and expert oversight intended regarding research integrity.
