Elsevier expands Geographical Pricing for Open Access to enhance global research participation -

Elsevier, a global provider of scientific and healthcare information, has expanded its Geographical Pricing for Open Access (GPOA) initiative to include an additional 150 gold open access journals following the success of its 2024 pilot.

The expansion brings the total to about 300 journals offering geography-based pricing to support authors in low- and middle-income countries in publishing their research through open access. The initiative determines pricing based on the country affiliations of all authors on a publication, using established economic indicators such as Gross National Income (GNI) per capita. It maintains a commitment to transparency and consistency in Article Publishing Charges to encourage participation from a wide range of global research communities.

The framework continues to evolve to assist universities, research institutions, funders, health professionals, and innovators through open access publishing. Since its pilot launch, the program has resulted in more than 19,000 articles from authors in over 100 low- and middle-income countries being accepted by participating journals. The initiative provides authors in lower-income regions the opportunity to publish on more equitable terms with pricing aligned to local economic conditions.

Gemma Hersh, Senior Vice President Sales and Commercial Director, Primary Research at Elsevier, noted that the geographical pricing model demonstrates the company’s commitment to advancing science and healthcare by fostering inclusion in research. Hersh emphasized that aligning publishing charges with authors’ economic contexts supports global knowledge sharing and innovation.
