STM publisher Elsevier, Netherlands, has announced the publication of the second edition of Molecular Biology as an enhanced ePub3 book, available from Apple’s iBooks and VitalSource.
Written by David Clark and Nanette Pazdernik and originally published in 2012, the new version of Molecular Biology is a transformation of traditional print textbook and reference content into a multidimensional digital format that is interactive, engaging and dynamic. It eliminates the need for students, researchers and professors to access content across multiple platforms and resources, bringing all the requisite learning tools – associated sites, online databases, journals, and supplementary material – under one roof for optimal use.
Molecular Biology, winner of a 2013 Texty award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, reflects the significant increase in the understanding of the molecular foundations of genetics. The book introduces basic concepts of how living organisms function at a molecular level and the technological advances that support the understanding of this, followed by more specific applications. Molecular Biology is published under the Academic Cell imprint, the result of collaboration between Academic Press books and Cell Press journals, combining primary research journal content with foundational book content.
The enhanced ePub3 version of Molecular Biology showcases Apple’s iBook functionality by combining self-testing digital widgets and high-quality primary research materials, all available offline and off-network. The interactive digital learning tools are designed to serve the needs of students, researchers and professors, and include 32 animations that bring abstract and complex concepts to life within the pages of the book; 36 ‘hot spot’ interactive learning widgets where the reader is prompted to select the area of the figure described by a keyword using the touch screen; 48 ‘drag and drop’ widgets to test knowledge of elements within a figure by dragging the appropriate label to the segment on the screen that it describes; and 62 Cell Press journal articles that correspond with chapters in the text.
In addition to the enhanced ePub3 book, Elsevier recently published several titles in the areas of life sciences under the Academic Press and Academic Cell imprints. These include The Dictionary of Cell & Molecular Biology by John Lackie; Handbook of Systems Biology by Marian Walhout, Marc Vidal and Job Dekker; Translational Neuroimaging: Tools for CNS Drug Discovery, Development and Treatment by Robert McArthur; and Molecular Biology (traditional print and ebook) by David Clark and Nanette Pazdernik.
All of these books are available through the Elsevier Store or can be found on ScienceDirect, a full-text scientific database offering journal articles and book chapters from more than 2,500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 11,000 books.
